Take a Child to School Program

Every Child Deserves a Place in Class

In Kibera a school year can end over a missing pair of shoes, an unpaid balance of a few hundred shillings, or a family that simply cannot stretch any further. Children who are bright, curious and desperate to learn drop out for reasons that have nothing to do with their ability.

Take a Child to School is our answer. We identify children who are out of school or at risk of dropping out, work with their guardians and local schools, and remove the practical barriers — fees, uniforms, shoes, books and sanitary products. Then we stay involved with mentorship and follow-up, so that enrolment turns into completion.

What the Programme Covers

We deal with the real reasons children leave the classroom, one family at a time:

Our Approach

We work through the community rather than around it. Children are identified with the help of guardians, teachers and community volunteers. Support is paid directly to schools and suppliers, so every shilling is accounted for, and each child is visited and followed up during the term. We also talk with parents about the pressures at home, because keeping a child in school is a family project rather than a one-off donation.
